Moorhead High School’s musical theater program is the most awesome theater program for young people that you can imagine. Who would believe the performance and production quality in a city of less than 40,000 people … a program that knocks out competition from Minneapolis and St. Paul, the largest cities in Minnesota?
The department and the fall productions are led by Rebecca Meyer-Larson (affectionately called “Mey-Lar” by students … Although it’s a nickname based on her two, hypenated surnames, I don’t know if there should be a hyphen or not in that abbreviation, but it sounds like “my lar”). The program’s productions earn award after award for excellence in theatrical productions. Every year, the talent of the students is beyond compare. But talent is nothing if not given the opportunity and the guidance to excel. Students at Moorhead High School have that rare opportunity.
This November’s production is “Chicago The Musical”. Without doubt, it will be as inspiring as so many past productions. Students can’t enter the program if they want to “slide through”. It requires immense time and dedication. An incredible amount of time and dedication. It all pays off when the curtain rises, and the first notes sound from the award-winning, high school orchestra, led by MHS orchestra teacher Brian Cole. Mesmerizing. That’s what the productions are. Year after year.

Our daughter, Caroline, a college student, hasn’t been in the high school’s musical theater program for two years now, but every fall, there’s no escaping the excitement!
